At least five people are feared dead while several others are wounded at the Olembe Stadium in Yaounde following a stampede on the evening of Monday the 23rd of January 2022.
The victims are said to have tried to force their way into the stadium after the match beating Cameroon against Comoros had started through one of the gates before the unfortunate incident happened. As they were forcing their way in, a stampede occurred which led to the death of more than five people including a Magistrate at the Yaounde supreme court.
Over a dozen others were wounded in the course, and most of them who were hurrying into the stadium to watch the match ended up in the hospital while some were in the mortuary. It was really a tragic event.
Eyewitnesses accounts say that the reason that happened is that despite the fact that the match had started, the officials at the gates were still bent on checking tickets and covid test one after the other, and the frustrated crowd had to force their way in which led to the stampede.
The game ended with Cameroon beating Comoros 2 goals to 1 thereby qualifying for the round of eight while Comoros has been eliminated.
